Web Mercator क्या है: हर Web Map की Map Projection समझें

Web Mercator (EPSG:3857) वह map projection है जिसे Google Maps, OpenStreetMap और लगभग हर web map use करता है। जानें यह क्या करता है, area distort क्यों करता है

लगभग हर interactive map जो आपने कभी use की है Web Mercator में drawn है। Google Maps, OpenStreetMap, Mapbox, MapLibre, Apple Maps, MapAtlas: सभी same projection, EPSG database में EPSG:3857 के रूप में identified। कारण simple है: यह वह projection है जो tile grid में cleanly scale होती है, किसी भी zoom पर shapes recognisable रखती है, और लगभग हर business map use case के लिए default backdrop के रूप में well काम करती है।

यह गाइड बताती है कि projection वास्तव में क्या है, यह जिस तरह से area distort क्यों करती है, और आपको कब कुछ और use करना चाहिए।

30 Seconds में Projection

पृथ्वी approximately एक sphere है। Computer screen flat है। Map projection एक mathematical function है जो sphere पर positions (latitude, longitude) को flat surface पर positions (x, y) में turn करती है। हर projection कुछ न कुछ trade off करती है: shape, area, distance, या direction। सभी uses के लिए कोई perfect projection नहीं है, इसीलिए cartography एक discipline के रूप में exists करती है।

Web Mercator shape और direction preserve करती है। Area distort होती है। Equator से जितनी दूर हों, features उतनी बड़ी दिखती हैं अपने ground पर actual size से।

Math, एक Paragraph में

Radians में longitude lng और latitude lat के लिए:

  • x = R * lng
  • y = R * ln(tan(pi/4 + lat/2))

जहाँ R projection द्वारा use किए गए spherical Earth का radius है (EPSG:3857 में 6378137 metres)। Tile grid इन x,y values को हर zoom level पर integer pixel coordinates में map करता है, zoom 0 एक single 256x256 tile में दुनिया cover करता है और हर subsequent zoom resolution double करता है।

Latitude bound approximately +/- 85.0511 degrees पर set है क्योंकि formula poles पर infinity की ओर जाता है। इसीलिए आपने जो भी Web Mercator world map देखी है उसमें polar regions clipped हैं।

Areas Stretch क्यों होते हैं

Poles की ओर area distortion क्यों बढ़ती है इसका कारण यह है कि y-axis latitude में linear नहीं है। ln(tan(...)) term latitude lines के बीच spacing को आगे उत्तर या दक्षिण जाने पर increase करता है। Equator पर, latitude का एक degree longitude के एक degree जितना vertical space लेता है। Helsinki पर, latitude का एक degree nearly twice vertical space लेता है।

दो famous side effects:

  • Greenland और Africa। Web Mercator world map पर, Greenland roughly Africa जितना बड़ा दिखता है। वास्तव में Africa लगभग चौदह गुना बड़ा है। वही illusion Antarctica को world के bottom पर एक continuous strip बनाती है।

EPSG:3857 बनाम EPSG:4326

  • EPSG:4326 (WGS84 lat/lng): angles। जिस तरह आप coordinates store करते हैं। जिस तरह GPS report करता है। जिस तरह GeoJSON उन्हें encode करता है। यह universal coordinate system है।
  • EPSG:3857 (Web Mercator): एक projection। जिस तरह coordinates display के लिए pixels में बदले जाते हैं।

Production में, rendering boundary को छोड़कर हर जगह 4326 में काम करें। PostGIS columns: geometry(point, 4326)। JSON payloads: WGS84 में [lng, lat]। Map library input: 4326 coordinates जिन्हें renderer internally project करता है।

Data 3857 में store करना almost always wrong है। जिस moment आपको distance compute करनी हो, किसी different map provider से query करनी हो, या GIS tool के through pipe करना हो, आपको 4326 पर back project करना होगा और conversion आपको precision cost करती है।

Web Mercator ने Web क्यों जीता

2005 में जब Google ने Maps launch किया, तो team ने Web Mercator choose किया क्योंकि यह simplest projection थी जो हर zoom level पर square tiles produce करती थी। Square tiles cleanly power-of-two pyramid में slot होती हैं: zoom 0 एक tile है, zoom 1 चार है, zoom 2 सोलह है। हर दूसरे major web map provider ने same convention follow किया क्योंकि tile sets interchangeable होने थे। बीस साल बाद, Web Mercator unspoken default है। लगभग हर map style, हर routing engine, हर analytics overlay 3857 assume करती है जब तक otherwise न बताया जाए।

Web पर कोई और projection पर switch करने का मतलब tile pyramid rebuild करना है। यह technically possible है (Mapbox globe view support करता है, deck.gl custom projections support करता है), और global view modes के लिए common होता जा रहा है, लेकिन street-level maps के लिए Web Mercator sticky है।

कब कुछ और Use करें

लगभग हर interactive city, regional, या country-level map के लिए Web Mercator use करें। दो scenarios में projections switch करें:

  • Thematic global maps जो regions में values compare करती हैं। Population density, election results, climate variables, कुछ भी जहाँ visual area meaning carry करता हो। North America के लिए Albers Equal Area use करें, Europe के लिए Lambert Conformal, पूरे planet के लिए Mollweide या Equal Earth।
  • Polar maps। Poles के पास Web Mercator fail हो जाती है। Arctic और Antarctic के लिए polar stereographic projection use करें।

Internal GIS analysis के लिए (spatial joins, distance buffers, overlay analysis), WGS84 angles में या country के लिए designed local projected system (UTM zones, Europe के लिए ETRS89) में काम करें। केवल display time पर reproject करें।

Web Mercator क्या है?

EPSG:3857 और EPSG:4326 में क्या अंतर है?

EPSG:4326 WGS84 latitude और longitude है, पृथ्वी पर position describe करने का universal तरीका। EPSG:3857 Web Mercator है, उन angles का एक flat x,y projection। आप coordinates 4326 में store करते हैं (latitude, longitude)। आप उन्हें 3857 में display करते हैं (projected pixels)। Modern map libraries conversion automatically handle करती हैं, लेकिन database या code में दोनों coordinate systems mix करना classic bug source है।

मुझे कब कोई और projection use करनी चाहिए?

किसी भी general-purpose interactive map के लिए Web Mercator use करें: street view, navigation, store locator, real estate, fleet tracking। Thematic maps के लिए equal-area projection (Albers, Lambert, Mollweide) use करें जो regions में values compare करते हैं, खासकर continental या global scale पर। Polar regions या globe views के लिए azimuthal projection use करें। Internal GIS analysis के लिए WGS84 lat/lng में काम करें और केवल display time पर project करें।
