Will my bill ever spike unexpectedly?

No. On the free tier, requests beyond your monthly limit are blocked automatically, not billed. On Pay As You Go, MapAtlas sends usage alerts before you approach your ceiling. Google Maps does not auto-cap spending when a budget alert fires, which led to widely reported billing shocks where developer costs jumped from $500 to $12,000 in a single month. MapAtlas is designed to prevent that scenario.

Is the free tier really free? Do I need a credit card?

Completely free, no credit card required. Every account gets 10,000 map loads, 10,000 autocomplete requests, 25,000 geocoding calls, and 100,000 navigation requests per month at zero cost. There is no trial period and no expiry date. A payment method is only needed when you choose to upgrade to Pay As You Go.

How does autocomplete billing work?

MapAtlas does not use Google's session token model, where failing to complete a session correctly causes every keystroke to revert to individual per-request billing. Is MapAtlas GDPR compliant? Where is data stored?

Yes. MapAtlas stores all data in EU data centers. User location queries and IP addresses are not routed through US infrastructure. Google Maps processes requests on Google's global network, which creates compliance complications for EU-based businesses and apps subject to GDPR. MapAtlas was built as a European-first platform and is ready for EU compliance audits and DPAs.

Am I locked into a contract?

No. The free tier has no commitment by definition. Pay As You Go is month-to-month: you pay only for usage in the previous calendar month and can stop at any time with no cancellation fee. Enterprise plans use custom agreements but include standard exit provisions. You can migrate away from MapAtlas at any time and your data remains yours throughout.

What happens if I exceed my monthly usage?

On the free tier, once your monthly allowance is used up, additional requests are blocked for the rest of the month. You will not receive an invoice. Google's API revenue funds a global consumer product stack including Street View, Waze, and the public Google Maps application. API customers effectively subsidise infrastructure they do not use. Yes. MapAtlas APIs are REST-based and the map SDK follows the same interface conventions as Mapbox GL JS, so existing code requires minimal changes. Most teams migrate one feature at a time, typically starting with geocoding, then maps, then routing. You can run both providers in parallel during the transition with no exclusivity requirement from MapAtlas.
