Weather Along Your Route: Driving Weather Forecast
Enter where you start and where you are going. The map shows the forecast for every stretch of the drive at the time you will be there, so you can spot rain, snow or strong wind before you set off.
Type places or coordinates, or click the map: the first click sets the start, the next one the destination. Drag a dot to move it.
What is a route weather forecast?
A normal forecast gives the weather for one place. A drive passes through many places, each at a different time. This tool follows your driving route, works out when you reach each point, and reads the forecast for that point at that hour. A four hour trip that starts dry can end in a downpour, and the coloured line on the map shows where that happens.
How it works
We find your start and destination with the MapAtlas Geocoding API and plan the driving route with the MapAtlas Directions API. Along the route we place a checkpoint every 20 minutes of driving, further apart on long trips, up to 24 in total, and estimate your arrival at each one from the route's own speeds. For every checkpoint we fetch the forecast from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway), which covers the whole world: hourly for the next two and a half days, then every six hours up to about nine days ahead.
Find the best time to leave
Rain and snow move, so leaving an hour later can mean a dry drive. The tool tries every departure in the next 12 hours in 30 minute steps, scores each trip on rain, snow, thunder and strong wind, and suggests the driest one. Change the Leave at time and the whole route updates straight away, without a new search.
When to use it
Road trips and holiday drives, long winter commutes, moving house with a van, towing a caravan, motorbike rides where rain matters more than in a car, and fleet or delivery planners checking whether a run will hit snow. If you drive something tall or tow a trailer, watch the wind column: steady wind above 60 km/h makes high-sided vehicles hard to handle.
