How do I measure area on a map?

Click each corner of the shape in order around its edge. Once you have three corners the tool closes the shape and shows the area in square metres, hectares, acres, square kilometres and square feet, plus the perimeter.

How do I calculate the acreage of a property?

Search the address to find the property, zoom in and click around its boundary. The acreage appears as soon as the shape has three corners. Add a corner at every bend in the boundary for a closer figure.

Ten acres is about 4.05 hectares, 40,469 square metres or 435,600 square feet. As a square it measures about 201 metres, or 660 feet, on each side, roughly five and a half football pitches.

How do I convert hectares to acres?

Multiply hectares by 2.471 to get acres, and multiply acres by 0.4047 to get hectares. The calculator shows both for every shape, so you do not need to convert by hand.

How accurate is the area calculator?

The formula is within 1 percent of a survey-grade calculation. Your tracing matters more: zoom in, place corners exactly on the boundary and add corners on curved edges.

Can I measure roof area for solar panels?

You can measure the roof footprint. A pitched roof has more surface than its outline, so divide the footprint by the cosine of the pitch. At 35 degrees that adds about 22 percent.

Can I use it for a real estate listing or land purchase?

Use it to check or estimate a plot size. It is not a legal survey, so confirm the official area in the title deed, land registry or a surveyor report before you sign.

How to measure land area on a map

Zoom in on the plot until you can see its edges clearly. Click each corner in order, walking around the boundary in one direction. After the third corner the tool closes the shape and shows the area; every extra corner refines it. Drag a corner to correct it, or use Undo last point to remove the latest one. You can also type an address and click Add point to place a corner at that location.

Acres, hectares and square feet compared

One hectare is 10,000 square metres, about 2.47 acres. One acre is about 4,047 square metres or 43,560 square feet. One square kilometre is 100 hectares, about 247 acres. For a sense of scale, a football pitch of 105 by 68 metres covers about 0.71 hectares or 1.76 acres, so 10 acres is roughly five and a half pitches. For plots under one hectare the tool leads with square metres and shows hectares underneath. From one hectare up it leads with hectares and shows square metres underneath, with acres, square kilometres and square feet alongside.

How the area is calculated

The tool treats your corners as a polygon on a spherical Earth and computes its area with a spherical-excess formula, so large shapes stay accurate. The difference from a survey-grade ellipsoid calculation is well under 1 percent, smaller than the error from tracing a boundary by eye. Keep the edges from crossing each other, because a figure-eight shape gives a wrong area. Map clicks are measured in your browser; an address you type is sent to the MapAtlas geocoder to find its location.

What people measure with it

Check the plot size in a real estate listing before a viewing. Measure a farm field to work out seed or fertiliser per hectare. Size a lawn, driveway or patio for a quote. Estimate a roof for solar panels, keeping in mind that a map shows the footprint: a roof pitched at 35 degrees has about 22 percent more surface than its outline. Plan an event site, or compare two land parcels side by side. For a purchase, confirm the legal area in the land registry or survey records.
