How to measure distance on a map
Type one place in From and another in To, then click Calculate distance. The tool finds both, draws the line and shows the distance in kilometres and miles. You can also click the map: each click adds a point, and From and To show the first and last one. Keep clicking to measure a path with several stops, and the tool adds up every leg in the order you placed them. Use my location adds your position as the next point. Drag a point to move it, use Undo last point to remove the latest one, or Clear points to start again.
Straight-line distance vs driving distance
The calculator measures the straight line between your points along the curve of the Earth, often called distance as the crow flies. From Big Ben in London to the Eiffel Tower in Paris that is about 340 km. The driving route through the Channel Tunnel is about 462 km, 36 percent longer. From Amsterdam to Berlin the gap is smaller: 574 km in a straight line and about 655 km by road. Use the straight line for flight distance, radio range or a quick comparison, and a routing service when you need the distance along roads.
How the distance is calculated
For each leg the tool applies the haversine formula, which gives the great-circle distance on a sphere with the mean Earth radius of 6,371 km, then sums the legs. The spherical model stays within about 0.5 percent of a full ellipsoid calculation, so the larger source of error is where you place the points. Zoom in before clicking when precision matters. The distance is calculated in your browser. To show an address in the From and To boxes, the tool sends the first and last point of your line to the EU-hosted MapAtlas geocoder. Addresses you type go to the same geocoder to find their location.
When a straight-line distance is the right answer
Check how far a hotel is from a conference venue, or whether a supplier falls inside a 50 km delivery zone. Estimate a flight or sailing distance between two cities. Plot a running, walking or cycling loop by placing a point at each turn. Compare the spread of stores or depots across a region, or measure the length of a fence, coastline or field boundary.
